Creamy Chickpea & Veggie Mash for Babies

This simple chickpea and veggie mash is smooth, flavorful, and packed with plant-based protein, iron, and fiber — perfect for babies 8 months and up. It’s easy to prep, freezer-friendly, and totally customizable based on the veggies you have on hand!

Small pot or steamer basket (for cooking/steaming veggies)
Fork or potato masher (for mashing)
Blender or food processor (optional, for smoother purée)
Mixing bowl
Baby feeding spoon
Storage containers (for leftovers or freezing)
- ½ cup cooked chickpeas unsalted, rinsed and softened
- ¼ cup steamed carrots or sweet potato, zucchini, or broccoli
- 1 tsp olive oil or unsalted butter optional for extra calories
- 3 tbsp water breast milk, or formula (to adjust texture)
- Optional pinch of cumin or garlic powder for 9+ months
Steam the veggies until very soft. If using canned chickpeas, rinse thoroughly and simmer 5 minutes for extra softness.
In a small bowl, combine chickpeas, steamed veggies, and olive oil.
Mash thoroughly with a fork or blend until smooth or slightly textured, based on your baby’s stage.
Add water, breast milk, or formula a little at a time to thin it out as needed.
Serve warm. Let baby self-feed or offer by spoon.
